Keywords are Dead – Long Live Keywords

Keywords are Dead – Long Live Keywords

There is ongoing controversy regarding what constitutes an effective search engine optimization campaign. This applies to keywords in regards to whether or not they are still a viable element to consider when generating Meta data, or tags. Many SEO specialists feel that their use is a waste of time since Google doesn’t apply as much weight to them as prior to 2005. After 2005 that focus shifted to the quality of page content and keywords delegated to secondary importance.

The page title is what the search engine crawls first so it is vital that the most important phrases be used here. This also applies to the Meta description which is a brief snippet describing what the theme or subject is on the page. Another component to consider is keyword density which is the number of times the term is used in relation to the total copy on a page. The suggested density is between 2 %and 5% for each term however the challenge is to still present a story that is optimized for search engines yet retains its flow and readability for human visitors. The adage, “everything in moderation, including moderation” is well suited to any campaign plan because high saturation levels of anything will most likely hurt rather than help. Listing keywords repeatedly in the Meta data is still a common mistake when generating those particular tags and is most often results in ranking being penalized until remedied.

Most marketing firms will still incorporate keywords into their campaigns while at the same time adjusting their usage to reflect what is important to Google. It’s certainly possible to rank well without search terms in the traditional sense but in the overall scheme of things, its better to include them and not need them, than to need them and not have them. As the Internet continues to evolve, so do search engines, which is why it is important to keep pace with developments if ranking well is important to a website.
