When it comes to advertising and marketing, if an advertisement doesn’t attract attention or motivate a response from a potential client in the first 3 seconds, it never will. Similar to how a first impression will affect ones perception of anything that follows after an initial meeting or introduction with new contacts. This is true when applied to web page titles as they are the introduction to the page and needs to display a message that will motivate website visitors to investigate the rest of the website. Titles are the first thing search engines see and use it as a basis to what the rest of the web page is about. Effective titles are short and concise while utilizing a primary keyword or phrase for search engine optimization (SEO) purposes. Search engines also have limits as to how many characters they will include which means anything longer than about 65 characters will be truncated or cut off so as not to be seen in the serps (search engine ranking pages). It’s also important to be aware that certain terms or stop words will be ignored by search engines so it’s advisable to avoid using them as well. Some examples are "and, the, of, with, where, but, I," with similar words essentially ignored by search engines. A general search for “stop words” will provide the required list of common terms. Titles have a huge impact on how a website ranks and it is currently considered the most important tag in the Meta data, at least by Google. Officially it isn’t a Meta tag at all but because it’s located in the head section of the page source code it gets included as such. Surprisingly, titles are often ignored or under developed by many webmasters and designers resulting in lost visitors. Investing some careful thought in composing a catchy title can and will result in major improvement in serps (search engine ranking pages) and help human visitors decide whether to explore a website further.
