A Few Good Meta Tags
By Sulumits Retsambew of Sulumits Retsambew Canada SEO
Of all Meta tags available on most generators, only a few carry the weight to affect how well a web page will rank. The usual selection available include: • Title • Author • Subject • Description • Keywords • Generator • Language • Expires • Abstract • Copyright • Designer • Publisher • Revisit-After • Distribution • Robots Of the fifteen listed above only three have an impact on web page rank. The most important Meta tags are the title, description and keywords. The remainder are only information used by search engines to determine who designed and copyrighted the site, how wide an audience it should be distributed to, what not to crawl and the preferred language. It should be noted that a website doesn't actually need these to function but it's unlikely it will rank well, if it all, for the market it's trying to capture. The title is the most important, although it’s not really a tag and only called such because it resides in the page head of the source code. Search engines first “see” this text and partially base the relevance of it to the rest of the website. To be effective it must include a primary keyword or phrase from the page content. Maximum length should be sixty five characters as anything more is truncated or cut off in the search engine results. The second most important tag is the description. This provides a brief introduction to the web page that is only seen by search engines, unless a human visitor takes some time to check the page source code which is accessible in both Internet Explorer and FireFox in the "view" section of the main menu. Composing an effective description should include the primary keyword or phrase in a couple of short sentences while not using terms in a repetitive manner. It can also be based on the first few lines of the web page content. Care should be taken not to exceed two hundred characters because search engines will truncate or cut off anything over that to conserve server bandwidth and space. Keywords are the final component that influence page rank. Once considered the critical element, they are now delegated to a supplementary application used in composing the other tags. They should not exceed two hundred and fifty characters and not be repeated as it is considered stuffing or spamming. All other tags provide search engines with information that does not have any bearing on how well a website ranks. Taking time to compose an effective page title and description by utilizing well chosen search terms can improve the site ranking, however due to the nature of organic optimization, changes made are generally not reflected online for several weeks.

Contributor's Note
Meta tags are often misunderstood and overlooked as to their importance and are not the absolute solution to ranking well on search engines. Only a part of the overall page structure that is evaluated by search spiders.
